The study of pre-collegiate education (2004-2006), focused on an investigation of how
teachers carry out exemplary work when external challenges are notably challenging. We
interviewed 40 teachers from four different high schools in economically disadvantaged
communities in the United States. At the time of the study, all of the high schools were
undergoing some kind of reform, either at a district, state, or national level.
