Mary-Claire King, A professor at the University of
Washington’s Division of Medical Genetics, spoke
ardently about her responsibility to the next
generation.  In fact, she characterized her mentoring
responsibilities as similar to those of a parent...

In her own words:

"Those of us who have been in the field for quite a while have enormous respect and
affection for the young people coming along.  That it is parental in the very best sense.
That you really feel a responsibility to help them along. You also feel, because it’s
absolutely essential, you’ve got to rely on them. They are the ones doing the work.
You have to rely on their data. Your expectations of them are very high....and they have
a right to expect absolute loyalty from you....That’s another sort of value we share,
which is the importance of the next academic generation."
